THE ROUNDUP | 28th APRIL 2020

by Ambika Nayak 28th Apr, 2020

Ambika Nayak (Kayan.A) picks her top 10 releases for the week. Presented in no specific order.

VA – 22 2

Ketan Bahirat Aka Oceantied, at the start of the current lockdown period wanted to work on something with producers from the Indie music community. From 11 producers the group finally came to a number of 22 producers across India who were to take part in a beat challenge.  Each producer was to add one sample to this group while the others would try to incorporate all these samples in their track in a span of 2 days.

The outcome was a slamming 22 track compilation comprising of some of our finest Indian producers like Yung.Raj, Nate08, Zokhuma, Three Oscillators,BigFat and more. The sales off their Bandcamp for a period of two weeks will be donated to Charity.

If I were you, I’d take a mere 60 minutes out of my day to give each track a listen. It’s a gorgeous spectrum of sound with each producer adding their own flavour to this mix.

Ohbliv – Spirit Medicine B Sides

Ohbliv, the prolific producer from Richmond, Virginia put out Spirit Medicine in March this year.

Sticking to the lush , lo-fi sound B sides of the already released Spirit Medicine is another breezy 16 minute ride.

I’d suggest giving the whole album a listen.

Marcus Intalex Music Foundation – Foundation With Calibre

This beautiful release comprises of 2 unreleased collaborations between Drum n Bass visionary Marcus Intalex aka Trevino (Passed away 2017) and Calibre , along with a Radio interview featurning Calibre and Fabio.

50% of the funds collected will be donated to a charity that supports young people experiencing difficulties with mental health.

Kali Uchis – To Feel Alive

One of my personal favourites, Kali Uchis, dropped this EP ‘To feel alive’ which is made up of demos recorded in her room. With a melancholic R&B vibe that also talks about the isolation era it doesn’t fail to set a mood.

Also when asked Kali about the artwork she described the artwork of the album as “the isolation era of me eating the por vida era of me’s pussy,” a reference to her 2018 album and her 2015 EP Por Vida.

Earl Sweatshirt – Whole World (ft. Maxo)

This release is not an album but a single that dropped this work and had to be on this list. Earl Sweatshirt comes back again after last EP ‘Feet of Clay’ featuring LA rapper Maxo.
It is a laid-back, warm but introspective and deep track produced by The Alchemist.

Easy for a summer afternoon

KeiyaA – Forever, Ya Girl

A Chicago bred Singer and Producer KeiyaA shares this intimate album that talks about hurt and what translated to me as pain but also getting to used that and finding your way through it.

An amalgamation of hip-hop jazz and R&B… and a hints of Psychedelic in there, the whole album is a journey.

Had to Quote KeiyaA from her  Bandcamp “ they don’t tell you about the beauty of the blackness from the darkness between those brighter days. “

James Blake – You’re Too Precious

Another single just released from James Blake who could never fail to amuse. This dreamy new love song apparently was written by him at 5 a.m and feels like that would be just the right time to listen to it.

Flume ft. Toro Y Moi – Difference (Extended)

My favourite pick of this list , this collaboration between Flume and Toro y Moi is an absolute treat to your eyes and ears. With the shorter version released a few weeks ago, the extended version is exactly what was needed!

With that jungle groove and hookey flume production, It brings about a feeling of nostalgia. A short journey you’d like to re visit again and again.

Various Artists – Raw Cuts Vol.3

Vandal Records , the French Drum n Bass label put out this compilation that features tunes from Amoss , Phentix & Nymfo, Revan & Hadley and Zero T.

If you dig this check out vol 1 and 2 as well

Press play and have your own party in your living room.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – Chunky Shrapnel

This album features 13 live performances handpicked from the bands 2019 European tour and includes a musical score written by Stu Mackenzie. A psychedelic journey , this album released with a feature length motion picture you might want to check out. Felt Chunky indeed.
